Artistic innovation has been a lifelong pursuit for Tyrue Jones. His approach and diverse style of tradition and nontraditional mediums has been considered fearless. He’s worked hard to become an established fine artist, graphic designer and professional television animator.

Also known as Slang, Chicago’s most influential graffiti artist, the Windy City’s streets still bear the legacy of the his mastery. Slang’s unique style has continuously evolved—from brick walls and subways of the urban landscape to canvas, fabric, television and film. His work has spanned three decades.

His signature style of “Figurative Graffiti” melds flowing shapes and ligatured letterforms of perfect symmetry and traditional figure painting. Included in this original design, he introduces an impressionistic color palette that can be seen thought out every medium he touches.

His canvasses have been shown in galleries throughout the continent. His past corporate clients include Warner Bros. Animation Studios, Startoons Animation Studios, Walt Disney Interactive, General Mills, Universal Music, Def Jam, Interscope, Allstate, Leo Burnett and Viacom (MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon).

One out of fifty Americans has come in contact with Tyrue Jones work, in one form or another.

Carl Craig is described as a creative visionary, an electronic music icon, an esteemed Grammy-nominated composer, a world-class DJ and an ambassador for his native Detroit. Yet, the common thread that runs through Craig’s broad musical canon and creative projects is a resounding fascination with futurism. The 41-year old producer has cultivated a unique path as an artist, entrepreneur and civic leader. He saw his first release in 1989 on Virgin UK, with subsequent releases on Transmat and Fragile. Craig then launched his own imprint, Planet e, in 1991, using the production name 69. Craig’s prolific nature is reflected in the many recording names he has used — Innerzone Orchestra, 69, BFC, Psyche, Paperclip People and Tres Demented. Under a rotating cast of titles he has consistently churned out a succession of full length albums, mix CDs, EPs and singles including: “Throw” (1994), “Landcruising” (1995), “More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art” (1997) “Programmed” (1999), “The Detroit Experiment” (2002), “The Workout” (2002), “Just Another Day” (2004),“Fabric 25” (2005), “The Album Formerly Known As” (2007), “Paris Live” (2007), the career retrospective double CD “Sessions” (2008), “The Legendary Adventures of a Filter King” (2009) and “Recomposed” (2009). In addition, Craig is a much sought after remixer who received a Grammy nomination for his re-take of the Junior Boys track, “Like a Child”. 2011 will mark 20 years of Planet e, which is in an extremely active release cycle this year. Performing November 19 at the fourth installment of D3 will mark Craig’s first Chicago appearance in four years.

Known widely as Chicago’s Queen of House Music, Darlene Jackson aka Lady D has been rocking dance floors nationally and internationally since 1995 with a sound that transverses techno, house, acid, disco and back again. Recent remixes and productions with the likes of Gold-record producing Ron Carroll and up and comer Max Loomis, have found Jackson’s focus shifting to studio work, and her 15 year anniversary tour Fame 15, playing in cities this Fall and Winter. Her audiences are diverse; from celebrity bashes for the likes of Queen Latifah and Black Eyed Peas to packed rooms in Europe, Asia and Russia. Also known for top-notch A & R, Lady D managed the AfterHours label, and now runs her own imprint, D’lectable Music. The Chicago Public Library currently features Lady D and D’lectable in their Fall ad campaign. As resident DJ, Lady D’s energetic sets are a consistent measure of quality for every D3. On November 19 she will play with Loomis for a dynamic Joint Effort tag team.

Joining Mr. Craig and Lady D behind the decks, is Chicago’s Jason Patrick, formerly of Detroit. Jason’s recent appearances at Varsity All-Stars in Chicago, Bionic in San Francisco, and reSOLUTE Detroit have earned him a reputation for seamless mixing in his DJ sets and tight, well-mastered original productions. His Klectik 005 project, “Octollo,” received the support of top DJs. Jason now finds himself quite busy with remix projects and directing new projects for his label Klectik. His recent remix for Dilo and Gurtz recent “Lotus Brainbow” EP has been widely acclaimed and is currently climbing the Beatport charts.

D’lectable Music is respected industry-wide for releasing some of the hottest records since 2004 with names as diverse as DJ Sneak, Style of Eye and more. In an effort to expose audiences to the depth of the artistry in techno, minimal and house, Nadia Podolsky’s VOLATL Events has booked a myriad of genre-defining artists including Jeff Mills, Bruno Pronsato, Adam Beyer, Camea, Mr. C and more, while producing dozens of memorable events in Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Miami with a forward-thinking approach to sound arrays. ArtKiwon, under the direction of SAIC grad and curator Kiwon Choi, has coordinated dozens of multimedia installations and shows. D3 (Deconstruct, Discover, Detroit) featuring Juan Atkins (aka Model 500 and Cybotron): The Origins of Detroit Techno

The D3 event series celebrates the innovators of Detroit techno and the 25th anniversary of this unique art-form. D3 (Discover Deconstruct Detroit) is not only a fusion of house and techno but a meeting of art, fashion & music as well. D’lectable Music along with VOLATL events have partnered …with ArtKiwon (a contemporary arts group) to bring a decidedly unique artistry to the events with live painting, live fashion and art installations in the club environment for total transformation of Chicago’s most famous venue, Smart Bar. Juan Atkins, the September headliner from Detroit, is widely credited as, “the originator of techno music.” Atkins will play alongside D3 resident/curator DJ Lady D and James Lauer, on Smart Bar’s top – notch Funktion One sound system. It is a terrific honor for the D3 event team, in conjunction with Smart Bar, to host Mr. Atkins as a part of the series.

It is only appropriate that the D3 Event series feature Juan Atkins, who along with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson (“The Belleville Three”), are specifically noted to be the originators of Detroit techno. Atkins was born in Detroit, Michigan, and subsequently developed his unique sound there, alongside frequent collaborators May and Saunderson, finding influence from Krawtwerk and Parliament Funkadelic. From his roots playing funk bass, Atkins began recording early techno tracks as Cybotron , releasing legendary tracks such as, “Techno City” and “Clear.” His next project, Model 500, conceived in 1985, famed for the hit “No UFO’s,” is a project that still finds great success for Atkins today. Atkins’ many releases, not only on his own imprint, Metroplex, but on such touted labels as Tresor, Capitol Records and KMS, have cemented his mark on music. He was featured in the documentary High Tech Soul and was an essential part of the innagural Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Much discussed and anthologized not only for his 20 years of production credits but also for his ability to rock a dance floor, Juan Atkins’ music and DJ-ing are deified in Europe and embraced all over the world.

D3 resident DJ Lady D marries the classic house tracks of Chicago’s past with the choicest four-to-the-floor stomps of today, and always throws down a soulful and sinful set. As host of Diversified Portfolio on Chicago’s WNUR 89.3fm he has inspired listeners with his passion for mixing together a wide selection of the best electronic music from early chicago acid house to deep modern dub and everything in between. James maintains this DIY attitude in his own studio productions and live sets through which he aims to re-creates the raw energy and sounds coming out of Chicago and Detroit back when it all was just getting stared.

Hoyun Son is a relational / conceptual artist working in various media includes text, performance, multi-media installation, and interactive installations. Her practice is mainly focused on generating new ideas/ways of quality life in this globalized, technology oriented society through open conversations and subtle but intentionally selective encounters arts can provide.  Born in Korea, Has background in Social Welfare and Information and Library Science. Hoyun Son moved to USA in 2001 to attend School of Art Institute of Chicago where she earned her BFA and MFA. She has performed in various public venues in Chicago, Boston, Dallas and Seoul, Korea. Exhibited her works in Chicago, Houston, Romania, Boston, Norway and Korea. Also she is recipient of various awards and fellowships include National Endowment for the Arts through DCCA, Illinois Art Council, Skowhegan Painting and Sculpture, Santa Fe Art Institute, MacDowell Colony in USA, and Sandness Kommune of Norway.

Artist Statement  by Sho Tsunoda

If I could be anything, I would like to be an artist. With one life I have, I would like to dedicate all my effort to what I love the most. I would like to picture the beauty of feeling things. Art was the only thing that allowed me to be myself completely. Painting taught me every one has his/her role. I would like to return favor by dedicating my art to people who desperately need art. I believe art is the ultimate way to depict passions, emotions, personal philosophy and thoughts as an individual regardless of sex, race, age or religion. In creating painting, I find beauty of humanity such as curiosity, self-improvement and appreciation of freedom, honesty and uniqueness. I believe every human has need to express themselves through what they do. I make art because art is the ultimate way of expressing self.

I am most passionate about abstract painting with oils because of the freedom I have in creating both shapes and colors. I usually paint with fingers because I feel my emotions are more directly transferred that way. Working intuitively without plans allows me to input different ideas and grow as an artist while I am painting. It helps me focus on momentary feelings within me. Color is extremely important for my works. I try to make them as intense as possible to express my passions throughout my life. I am flattered by how colors affect and interact with human minds. I use a lot of colors out of tube to represent vividness, intensity and pureness of life. I also believe that today we live further away from the ground than before. We barely touch mud today.I believe that it has been and it will affect the color of paintings. The colors used today are more saturated than in history.

Early impulse is one of themes in my painting. The first day I made art, it felt so right. I have something to put all my effort. I have a dream. I am living a dream. I am very happy to be able to truly enjoy and appreciate art and dedicate my life for it. I wouldn’t  be where I am without making a decision for taking risks.  I would like to paint as if I have never painted or I have never seen colors before. When my art was purely about my impulses that I couldn’t help feeling, I believe I was purest as an artist. Through painting, I search for core humanity that we all share and attempt to communicate with as many people as possible.
